Scotland's great poet, collector and writer of songs, Robert Burns, was born January 25, 1759. Our annual celebration of his birthday features recordings of a small sample of his songs by some of Scotland's leading singers.

Boston area Celtic musicians (that's "Keltic," not "Seltic"!) are featured in this week's program, and the lineup of native and relocated musicians in Boston is quite an impressive one!

The classic ballads of England and Scotland were collected by Harvard Professor Francis Child in the late 1800s, and they continue to turn up in recordings by British and Celtic singers, as will be featured in this week's program (not to be confused with songs for children).

The featured instruments in this week's program are button accordions and fiddles, as heard in bands like the aptly-named Buttons and Bows.

This week we feature musicians who have died in recent years, and who left us a legacy of recordings, including the likes of Johnny Cunningham, Derek Bell, Frankie Kennedy, and Andy McGann.

Host Bryan Kelso Crow samples some of the best vocal and instrumental tracks from new and recent releases in this week's program.

05-13 3/31/05 Festival Preview
Performers at this year's Southern Illinois Irish Festival will include the Chicago Irish band Gan Bua, singer Deborah Packard, local band The Dorians, and students of the St. Louis Irish Arts group, all of which are featured on this week's festival preview program.
