Billy McComiskey: Outside the Box


Brooklyn-born accordion player Billy McComiskey has been turning out brilliant recordings since the late 1970s, with groups like Trian, The Irish Tradition, and Green Fields of America, as well as in solo and duo settings. With his recent flurry of work on the Compass Records label, including his new solo CD "Outside the Box," it's time to turn the spotlight on this mainstay of the east coast Irish-American music scene.

Songs of Robert Burns


Scotland's leading poet and songwriter, Robert Burns, was born on January 25, 1759, and his birthday has become a worldwide day for celebrating all things Scottish. We will sample some of the more than 300 songs he collected, adapted, and wrote, as recorded by some of the leading Scottish vocalists of our own time.

A Woman's Heart


1994 saw the release of one of the best-selling CDs in Irish music history, "A Woman's Heart," featuring the title song by Eleanor McEvoy. It was soon followed by "A Woman's Heart 2," and, in 2003, by "A Woman's Heart: A Decade On." This week's program features highlights from all three albums, spotlighting some of the leading vocal and instrumental work by Irish and American women.

This week we find out what a search of the record library yields when we enter in various bird names used in tunes in songs, like "The Lark in the Morning," and "The Yellow Bittern." Water birds and land-based birds are also invited.
